Structured Cabling & Server Room Organization
Reorganized a server room: tidied patching and cables, arranged the rack equipment and prepared a detailed map of the local network.
The starting point
Over time, crossed patch leads and long loose cable loops had accumulated in the rack. Some connections ran in front of the equipment, while the main cable bundle entered from the side. This made individual connections difficult to trace and ports harder to reach. The task was to organize the existing network and document its structure.
Work completed
Cable routing
Untangled overlapping runs, grouped the cables and organized their paths through the rack. Removed haphazard crossings in front of the equipment.
Patching
Put the connections between patch panels and network equipment in order. Cable managers help keep patch leads within the patching area.
Network map
Prepared a detailed local network map so the infrastructure could be understood from a diagram as well as by tracing physical cables.
Patching before and after
Photos of the same rack show the changes to cable routing and connections. Some cables are still pulled forward in the second photo: it records work in progress rather than final acceptance of the entire server room.
A detailed local network map
A network map was a separate deliverable. It complements the physical organization of the server room: the rack shows where connections are located, while the diagram explains how infrastructure components relate to each other. The map provides a reference for maintenance, tracing connections and planning changes.
The working diagram, internal addresses and organization details are not published in this case study.
The result
The rack patching and cables were put in order, and the local network received a detailed map. Physical organization and documentation now support each other, making the infrastructure easier to inspect and understand before further changes.
